Types of Massages
Swedish Massage
Swedish techniques are probably what you typically think of when you hear the word 'massage'. This session will be 60-90 minutes and will cover all the body areas including back, legs, arms, hands, feet, and sometimes face and scalp. The pressure is light to moderate. This is a relaxing massage that indicates increased circulation, better sleep, the clearing of toxins from the body, and decreased stress levels. Recommended for beginners or those who need an escape!
Deep Tissue
Deep Tissue massage operates by delving deeper into the muscle tissue. This massage may be full body, focus on a specific area, or be combined with Neuromuscular techniques. This is for the individual who is stressed out, tired, or sore. Ideal for athletes or anyone who prefers deeper pressure. Deep Tissue will address tight and overused muscles througout the body, increase range of motion, expedite recovery from surgery or injury, reduce scar tissue, release toxins, and can be extremely relaxing.
Neuromuscular
euromuscular or "NMT" massage techniques will be deeper and more specific than a traditional Swedish Massage. Using gradually deeper pressure in specific areas called "trigger points" where muscles are tight or 'ischemic' (lacking blood and nutrient flow), the therapist will manually restore the muscle tissue to proper function. Oftentimes a trigger point will 'refer' or cause pain in other areas besides just the affectd tissue. NMT is unique in that it aims to cure the actual cause of pain and imbalance, not just the symptom. Physical imbalances can be observed and treated strategically based on the individual. NMT techniques are appropriate and highly effective for tension headaches, sciatica, low back pain, plantar fasciitis, shin splints, and many more problems. This technique is often used in combination with Deep Tissue for best results.
Reflexology
Reflexology is an ancient technique dating back thousands of years to many early cultures such as the Native Americans, Asians, and Egyptians. The foot is said to represent a map that corresponds to all the internal organs and systems in the body. By treating these areas in the feet, the corresponding organs and body areas are also treated. While not all discomfort present in the feet implies organ imbalances, the practice of reflexology has proven through the centuries to work wonders for the health and regeneration of the body. These sessions are 30 or 60 minutes and are focused on the feet. 15 or 30 minutes sessions also make great add-ons to other full-body sessions.
Pre-Natal or Pregnancy Massage
Few people need a massage more than an expectant mother! For safety reasons, a massage can only be administered after the first trimester has ended, and as long as there are no complications with the pregnancy. In order for the expectant mother to be comfortable, she will be placed in 'side-lying' position to protect the growing baby. A body pillow and neck pillow will be used to make her comfortable in this position. This massage can be light and relaxing or deep and therapeutic.
Couples Massage
A couples massge is a great way to connect to a significant other, spouse, friend, or family member. Typically this will be a relaxing one-hour Swedish Massage for each person, although some pairs prefer Deep Tissue instead. Massages can either be given back-to-back, or at the same time, side-by-side, based on the preference of the couple.
